Recently, founding a new trade union “Trade Union of Education” would not grasp our attention unless discovered that we its founders and leaders are former representatives of “Professional Syndicate of Education”, which represented a yellow trade union and served governmental purposes during the former regime.

According to Giorgi Burjanadze, head of “Association against Corruption – Protection of Rights of Physical or Legal Entities”, Giorgi Latsabidze, a head of Trade Union of Education, and Petre Tsurtsumia, who worked in the Ministry of Education and Ministry of Corrections together with his friend Dimitry Shashkini are former Syndicate representatives. Head of Kindergarten Management Agency, Ramaz Sulamanidze gathered kindergarten directors and ordered them to sign agreements with new trade union. Teachers say that despite their unwillingness they shall obey to Agency’s order and join the union, which they recommend.

Agency heads state in interviews that they do not promote any union and consider that teachers’ themselves shall make decision whether to join particular organziation or not. Director of kindergarten #115, Nino Sichinava indicates that the only union they cooperate with is Educators and Scientists Free Trade Union of Georgia that has been always supporting educators.

Ramaz Sulamanidze refused collaboration with a new trade union and stated that law obliges him not to hinder union activism and allow them to educational institutions. He rejected the fact of lobbying particular union and noted that their doors are open for everyone.

Giorgi Latsabidze blamed “Professional Syndicate of Education: for being politicaly biased and claims that the motif for establishing a new union is to restore teachers’ dignity and actually protect their labour rights.
