In an interview with the magazine “Gza” Maia Kobakhidze discussed the role of private tutors in Georgian Education system. She noted that the main reason why parents prefer to hire a private tutor for their children is due to a large number of students in class and the differences between school curriculum and university entrance examination syllabus. Nobody doubts that it is nearly impossible for teachers to transfer knowledge and give equal attention to 35-40 students in 45 minutes. Naturally, it affects quality of teaching. Whilst being a private tutor, a teacher works individually with a student and uses various educational materials and not only the school books. Certainly, the institute of tutorship would not be so popular if schools were able to provide necessary education to pupils. It is also interesting that the same problem goes for private schools, which can be explained by low quality of teaching materials at schools and the fact that they do not cover examination topics.
Unfortunately, tutorship poses problems to education system, as tutors may not wish to teach at school, but rather to stay at home and have private students, which is more profitable and less stressful job, says Maia Kobakhidze.
